Rainelle and the Meadow River
Rainelle exists because of timber. The town was built around the Meadow River Lumber Company, which in its era ran one of the largest hardwood sawmills in the world, and the community grew up around the mill and the rail line that served it. The mill is long closed, but the name stuck to the valley — and to this building.
The town's more recent history is harder. The June 2016 flood hit Rainelle severely, and the recovery drew contractors and restoration crews from well outside the region. A fair number of them needed somewhere to stay for months, which is precisely the gap this kind of housing fills.
